Over the years I came to photograph literally hundreds of trans women at Divas – dancers, bartenders, other staff, and many of the trans women who frequented Divas as a safe and welcoming place to hang out, drink, and socialize.
I met Ashley at Divas Nightclub and Bar, San Francisco’s famed transgender club, which was by far the most extensive trans club in the US until it closed about two years ago.
I became the de facto house photographer at Divas in 2003, when the club instituted topless dancing and I took photos of the performers there for a centerfold spread in Spectator, then San Francisco sex-oriented weekly newspaper.
